Teaching aims and learning objectives:
By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Understand the text as a whole and get to know what Nick does in the story.
2. Get to know the meaning of “decorate his tail, colour his wings, save the young bird” and pronounce them clearly.
3. Learn some reading strategies, such as finding the topic sentence.
4. Talk about their impressions to the characters and the story, and deepen their confidence and faith of being themselves.
Teaching procedures:
Step1. Lead in
Enjoy some pictures and talk about birds and the topic sentence.
Step2. Pre-reading
1. Talk about the cover of the book.
2. Compare the first picture and the last one of the book.
Step3. While-reading
1. Read for the main character.
2. Read for the main plots
1) Read and find the things Nick does in the story.
2) Students tell the page numbers first.

3) Talk about the key words about what Nick does in the story.

Talk about Nick and the other birds on the first page.
4. Listen and find
1) Listen and read from P.6 to P.8.
2) Find the birds Nick meets in the story.

5) Talk about what the students want to say to Nick.

1) Read the story quickly again and find the topic sentence.

Read the story with the tape, pay attention to the pronunciation and the intonation.

1. Summarize.
2. Think and share
Talk about the reaction to the book after reading: Everyone has his or her own strong points and weak points. Having weak points doesn’t mean that you’re not cool. Just remember that everyone is different and unique to this world. So don’t be sad. Don’t be shy. Be confident and be yourselves.
