Canada—land of the maple tree

Teaching objectives:

       By the end of this period, students will have a better understanding of the 4 countries of Canada and master the skill of sorting out information according to different categories.

Teaching steps:

Step 1: Lead-in

Students will be shown some pictures about typical scenery of different countries as the way to attract students’ attention and broaden their horizons. Then students will be shown more pictures about Canada so as to lead in the topic.

After that, students will be encouraged to think about the symbol, national flag, capital city and so on.

Step 2: Fast reading

With the basic knowledge of Canada, students will be guided to go through the whole passage for more detailed information. Before going through the passage, students will be asked to think about which of the following aspects are mentioned in the whole passage: leaders, landscape, history, location, size, places of interest, major cities, famous people, national symbol, population, language.

 

Step 3: Careful reading

1. Since the whole passage is made up of several categories and each category is mentioned in different paragraphs, students will be guided to find out the structure of the whole passage as well as the main idea of each paragraph.

2. After this step. Students will be asked to focus on different categories mentioned above for detailed information to complete the following table. When talking about the Gold Rush and the Niagara Falls, necessary information needs to be introduced so that students will know more about them.

 

3. Since 4 major cities are mentioned in the whole passage, students will be encouraged to read the passage again and find the detailed information about these 4 major cities as follows.

 

Step 4: Consolidation

       After this step, students will be encouraged to compete with others in the following ways.
